Minister McCoy Addresses Housing Issue in Sarah Johanna

Public Affairs Minister Kwame McCoy recently visited Sarah Johanna, East Bank Demerara, to engage with residents whose homes were demolished on privately owned land.

The demolition, carried out in compliance with a court order, affected seven families who were squatting on the property.

During the meeting, residents acknowledged their squatting status and expressed willingness to relocate.

They highlighted their desire for assistance from the government to acquire land they can legally occupy.

Savitri Lachman, speaking on behalf of the displaced squatters, emphasized their readiness to relocate if provided with suitable alternative land.

Evelyn Singh also voiced her plea for assistance, appealing for temporary support from the government during this challenging period.

Minister McCoy assured the affected families that the Ministries of Housing and Water, and Human Services and Social Security are collaborating to address the housing issue promptly.

He prioritized support for the seven families directly affected by the demolitions.

In the interim, the government is offering temporary shelter to those in need, while others are seeking refuge with family and friends.

The situation in Sarah Johanna underscores ongoing challenges related to housing and land ownership in Guyana, with efforts underway to find equitable solutions for affected residents.
