Minister of Public Works, Hon. Juan Edghill, has expressed his satisfaction with the financial allocations in the 2024 budget for the Ministry of Public Works, emphasizing that the provisions are adequate to propel the ongoing transformation of infrastructure projects throughout Guyana.

In a recent statement, Minister Edghill praised the budget as a “fantastic financial plan” that prioritizes the acceleration of infrastructure development across the country.

Out of the total allocation of over $236 billion for the Public Works Ministry, a substantial amount of $73.2 billion has been specifically earmarked for the construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance of community roads.

Minister Edghill highlighted the significance of this allocation, noting that it will address the improvement and upkeep of vital community road networks, ensuring better connectivity and accessibility for residents.

In the broader context of road infrastructure, the 2024 budget allocates $204.1 billion for the upgrade of roads and bridges nationwide.

This substantial investment underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing the country’s transportation infrastructure.

The provisions include funds for hinterland airstrips ($2.3 billion) and hinterland roads ($5.5 billion), contributing to improved connectivity in remote regions.

River transport infrastructure is also a focal point, with $8.1 billion allocated for this purpose.

Additionally, navigational aid interventions will receive $950 million in funding, while $2.7 billion will be directed towards advancing works on several stellings, further improving water transport facilities.

Minister Edghill emphasized that these allocations are designed to enhance the overall infrastructure network, catering to the diverse needs of the Guyanese people.

He highlighted that the budget’s provisions are in line with the ministry’s agenda to accelerate the implementation of infrastructure projects in 2024.

Among the notable projects mentioned by Minister Edghill are the construction of the new Corentyne River Bridge, for which the government anticipates signing the contract this year, and the recent signing of the contract for the new Wismar Bridge.

The government is also exploring the possibility of a new high-span bridge across the Berbice River.

In conclusion, Minister Edghill emphasized that the 2024 budget’s focus on infrastructure projects reflects the government’s dedication to the well-being and development of the people of Guyana.
