The Government of Guyana has allocated $2.7 billion for road works in Region Five, with over 400 lots to be developed across 33 villages.

Public Works Minister Juan Edghill made the announcement during a recent contract award ceremony at the Fort Wellington NDC.

Minister Edghill emphasized that the distribution of smaller contracts for road works is not intended to sideline larger contractors.

In fact, 78 roads are being tendered for big contractors as part of the broader infrastructure development.

“This way of doing our work is not shutting down the big contractors. They still have their place,” said Edghill.

The Minister also highlighted the growing involvement of women in the construction sector, pointing out that their participation has proven competitive, with some even delivering projects more efficiently.

“We have opened the gate and allowed women to come into the construction class to compete against some of the best contractors we have had at the Ministry of Public Works,” he stated.

So far, 135 community roads have been completed in Region Five, contributing to the overall progress in the region’s road infrastructure.
