Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn has called for increased fines and the use of technology to address the rising number of road accidents in Guyana.

Minister Benn highlighted that young males are primarily responsible for these accidents, especially during extended weekends and late-night hours after social events.

He noted that offenders often evade justice through bribery or by leveraging connections with high authorities.

To combat this issue, Minister Benn believes that stricter penalties and enhanced enforcement measures are essential.

Police officers will soon be equipped with body cameras to document their interactions with the public, which is expected to improve accountability.

Additionally, discussions will soon be held with the Attorney General regarding the increase of traffic fines.

This initiative aligns with Guyana’s commitment to the UN’s Second Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030, which aims to reduce traffic deaths and injuries by 50 percent by 2030.
