Several prominent organizations in Guyana have come together to host the 2024 Menstrual Health and Hygiene Expo, aligning with the global observance of Menstrual Hygiene Day on May 28.

The event, held at the Girls Guide Association, aimed to educate and empower women and young girls about menstrual health.

Despite the weather, numerous women and young girls attended the expo, eager to learn about their bodies and menstrual health.

The event highlighted the challenges women across Guyana face in accessing menstrual hygiene products and aimed to dismantle harmful taboos and stigmas associated with menstruation.

Chief Commissioner of the Girls Guide Association, Schmel Patrick, emphasized the importance of openness and engagement in conversations about menstrual health.

She noted that educating young girls about menstruation without the burden of traditional taboos is crucial for their well-being.

Attendees shared their perspectives on menstrual health and hygiene.

Netu Lal from the Avyanna Foundation stressed that access to menstrual products should be a right, not a privilege, and advocated for spreading awareness to combat the stigma associated with periods.

Dr. Sara Scott, Founder of SRHR Adventures, provided information on menstrual cycles, self-care during periods, and how to prepare a period pack.

Akeisha Blair from Massy Distribution discussed the availability of products like Cetamol for menstrual pain relief.

In addition to product availability, the expo highlighted the importance of fitness and well-being in managing menstrual health.

Julian from Stride 592 explained how exercise can help alleviate menstrual pain and provide mental distraction, promoting activities like yoga in the park.

The expo also featured a marketplace offering a wide range of menstrual hygiene products, including sustainable and eco-friendly options.

The theme for this year’s Menstrual Hygiene Day is “Together for a Period-Friendly World,” reflecting the collective effort to improve menstrual health and hygiene.

The event underscored the significance of education, access to resources, and breaking down stigmas to create a supportive environment for menstrual health in Guyana.
