Recent statistics from Guyana’s Ministry of Health reveal a concerning trend among men, with an obesity rate standing at 41.6 percent.

Dr. Sawan Jagnarain, Men’s Health Coordinator at the Ministry, emphasized the urgent need for men to prioritize their health and take proactive steps to address these issues.

Dr. Jagnarain highlighted that obesity significantly increases the risk of developing serious health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol.

These conditions, if left unchecked, can lead to severe complications including heart disease, stroke, and vascular diseases, ultimately posing a risk of premature death.

Another critical health issue affecting men in Guyana is prostate cancer, which Dr. Jagnarain noted is on the rise. He urged men, particularly those aged 40 and older, to undergo regular screenings for early detection.

Stressing the importance of early diagnosis, he pointed out that timely screenings can potentially save lives and reduce the impact on families.

For men with a family history of prostate cancer, especially those of Afro-Guyanese descent, Dr. Jagnarain emphasized the importance of proactive screening due to their higher susceptibility to the disease.

He highlighted two primary screening methods available in the country: the digital rectal examination and the prostate-specific antigen test.

Dr. Jagnarain’s warnings come amidst efforts to raise awareness about men’s health issues in Guyana.

The Ministry of Health continues to advocate for regular health check-ups and screenings as essential steps towards preventing and managing these prevalent health concerns among men.
