A memorial site will soon stand as a poignant tribute to the children who tragically lost their lives in the Mahdia Dorm fire one year ago.
Prime Minister Mark Phillips announced plans for the establishment of the memorial during a solemn ceremony held at Micobie Village, Region 8, exactly one year after the devastating tragedy.
The memorial will serve as a permanent reminder of the lives lost and ensure that the memories of the 20 young souls remain etched in the nation’s collective consciousness.
Speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister Phillips expressed the government’s commitment to honouring the victims by implementing recommendations made by a Commission of Inquiry convened by President Dr. Irfaan Ali.
The inquiry determined that the fire was maliciously set and put forth recommendations regarding fire prevention, building design, training, and counselling services.
Prime Minister Phillips affirmed the government’s dedication to executing all these recommendations.
Alton Williams, the brother of Lorita Williams, one of the girls who perished in the fire, emotionally paid tribute to his sister during the ceremony.
He reminisced about her vibrant spirit and unfulfilled dreams, emphasizing that her legacy lives on in the hearts of those who loved her.
Prime Minister Phillips reiterated the government’s unwavering support for the families affected by the tragedy.
He was joined by Ministers Joseph Hamilton, Oneidge Walrond, and Susan Rodrigues, all of whom offered their solidarity and assistance to the grieving families.
As preparations for the memorial site unfold, it serves as a beacon of remembrance and a symbol of solidarity for the community of Mahdia and the nation as a whole.
