Drainage and irrigation in Region 3 are set to improve significantly with the construction of a Hope-like canal.
This announcement was made by Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha during a visit to the region on Wednesday.
The Agriculture Minister emphasized the critical role of drainage and irrigation in increasing agricultural output by mitigating flooding and protecting crops and livestock.
The new canal signals the government’s continued investment in transforming Guyana into the breadbasket of the Caribbean.
Minister Mustapha stated that the design for this massive project is currently underway and will be completed soon.
He highlighted the importance of residents paying their rates and taxes to support ongoing and future development initiatives.
While the government is committed to providing funding, community contributions are also essential.
Additionally, Mustapha explained that investments are being made to ensure farmers have access to adequate planting materials and other inputs.
This support is being facilitated through the National Agriculture Research and Extension Institute (NAREI).
