Medical Laboratory Technician Program Launched in Region Six

The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Health Sciences Division, has initiated a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program in Region Six, training twenty-five individuals to become skilled professionals in the field.

This one-year program, launched at the Regional Health Services Boardroom in New Amsterdam, aims to enhance healthcare delivery in the region by providing trained personnel.

Dr. Frank Anthony, the Minister of Health, highlighted the significance of MLTs in various areas of healthcare, including clinical labs, blood banking, and specialized labs.

He emphasized the importance of MLTs in the ongoing transformation of the health sector, particularly in advancements related to diabetes testing and genetic sequencing capabilities.

The program will empower participants to contribute to efforts aimed at eliminating infectious diseases in Guyana.

Regional Chairman David Armogan welcomed the training initiative, emphasizing its role in boosting the capacity of the regional health system.

He stressed the importance of developing human resources in the public health sector to fulfill the region’s needs.

Chandroutie Persaud, Deputy Director of Health Sciences, encouraged the students to make the most of the training program.

The launch event was attended by notable figures, including Regional Executive Officer Narindra Persaud, Director General of the Ministry of Health Dr. Vishwa Mahadeo, Medical Laboratory Technologist Ron Ross, and other officials.

The MLT program represents a significant step towards addressing healthcare needs in Region Six and contributes to the overall development of the public health workforce.
