Medical Data Protection Bill To Be Tabled Soon

…MOH working on new Public Health Act

The Medical Data Protection Bill is among several pieces of legislation that will be laid in the National Assembly soon.

This is according to Health Minister, Dr. Frank Anthony, who said that the bill forms part of the Government’s efforts to upgrade Guyana’s legal medical landscape.

He explained that the Medical Data Protection Bill will support the Ministry’s efforts to move towards electronic health records, and also allow for the protection of patients’ confidentiality, and introduce hefty fines against health workers who breach it.

Dr. Anthony confirmed that the Bill has been completed.

Moreover, it was also disclosed that the Health Ministry is also working with a team from the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) to finalize a new Public Health legislation.

The Minister says the current Public Health laws are very outdated and the new legislation will cover all aspects of public health and wellness.

The ministry will also – in the new month – launch new guidelines for the treatment of diabetes.
