In an effort to bridge the gap between the media and the judiciary, a significant engagement took place today at Cara Lodge.
The meeting aimed to deepen mutual understanding and explore ways to improve collaboration between the two professions.
The session was attended by journalists, the Chancellor of the Judiciary, Chief Justice, other judges, magistrates, and members of the judiciary.
Chancellor Justice Yonette Cummings emphasized the crucial role of the media in shaping public perception and acknowledged the judiciary’s responsibility to be accountable for its actions.
Justice Cummings highlighted that while the judiciary can face criticism, it is essential that such feedback is respectful and constructive.
She also expressed the judiciary’s willingness to be held accountable and its openness to continuous dialogue with the media.
Nazima Raghubir, President of the Guyana Press Association, and other key figures were present to facilitate the discussion.
The session was noted as the first of its kind in recent times, with plans to make such engagements a regular occurrence, either annually or bi-annually.
The initiative underscores a commitment to demystify the judicial system and improve transparency, fostering a better working relationship between the media and the judiciary.
