The rehabilitation of the Meadow Bank Wharf in Georgetown, which is expected to be completed within two months, is a significant step toward improving the facilities for fishermen and vendors in the area.
Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha, during an inspection of the site on Friday, confirmed that the government has invested 190 million dollars in the rehabilitation project.
The works include the construction of a new sanitary block, updated tarmac vendors’ stalls, improved washroom facilities, and the installation of new concrete drains to enhance the irrigation around the wharf.
The rehabilitation aims to address previous complaints made by fishermen and vendors about the state of the facility.
Minister Mustapha shared that the washroom area has already been completed, and other aspects of the project are progressing as planned.
The wharf, operating 24 hours a day, is a key fishing port for Georgetown’s fishermen and vendors, making the improvements crucial for the area’s functionality and sanitation.
This rehabilitation project is a direct result of a promise made by President Dr. Irfaan Ali in March of this year, after visiting the wharf and listening to the concerns of the local community.
The improvements are expected to boost the facility’s efficiency and the livelihoods of those who rely on it daily.
