Vendors at McKenzie Municipal Market in Linden can look forward to improved safety measures with the upcoming installation of new lighting throughout the market.
This decision follows concerns raised by Linden Mayor Sharma Solomon about delays in the lighting project.
During the monthly statutory meeting of the Linden Mayor & Town Council, Mayor Solomon highlighted that while the lights had been acquired over a month ago, installation had yet to begin despite pre-determined locations.
The delay, coupled with recent security incidents, prompted urgent action.
In response to these concerns, Mayor Solomon instructed the Works Superintendent to prioritize the installation of the lights to enhance vendor security.
Initially, the installation was expected to be completed within 24 hours.
However, after feedback from Councilwoman Sancha Halley, the timeframe was extended to 72 hours to ensure thorough implementation.
The Mayor also referenced a recent robbery in which a jeweler lost six million dollars, underscoring the critical need for improved lighting around the market.
Vendors had expressed growing unease over the darkness that previously surrounded the area, contributing to security fears.
Superintendent of Works at the Linden Town Council, Ian Ali, has confirmed that the lighting installation will commence within the coming week.
This development is anticipated to significantly improve safety conditions for vendors and enhance the overall security of McKenzie Market.
