Sixteen street football teams are set to clash at the National Park tarmac in Georgetown on February 18, embarking on an evening of thrilling football action condensed into a single night of competition.
Traditionally spanning over six nights, this year’s championship will feature all matches packed into one exhilarating event. Defending champions, ‘Back Circle’, will face off against fierce competitors, vying for the top prize of GY$500,000. The second-place team will secure GY$250,000, with GY$150,000 and GY$100,000 awarded to the third and fourth-place finishers, respectively.
Representatives from MVP Sports and Ansa McAl expressed their support for the tournament, emphasizing its role in fostering competition and discovering talented players within the local community.
Organizer of the event, Edison Jefford, stressed the importance of teams being prepared for the intense matches, aiming to instill discipline into the street football format. The opening round will witness eight intense clashes, with the winners progressing to the final rounds.
Among the notable matchups, ‘Back Circle’ will take on ‘Family’ and ‘California Square’ will face ‘Agricola’. ‘Gold is Money’ will compete against ‘Lodge All Stars’, while ‘Stabroek Ballers’ will challenge ‘Ballerz Empire’. Other matchups include ‘Sparta Boss’ versus ‘Unstoppable’, ‘Festival City’ against ‘LA Ballers’, ‘Bent Street’ versus ‘Team Cruel’, and ‘North East La Penitence’ clashing with ‘Team Xtreme’.
Police Commissioner (Ag.), Clifton Hicken, has pledged full support for the tournament, ensuring a safe and secure environment with police presence throughout the event.
