Major Road and Bridge Upgrades Coming to Region Two, Says Minister Edghill

By Celestine Chacon, NCN News – December 30, 2024

All major roads in Essequibo, Region Two, are set for significant upgrades, according to Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill.

In a recent meeting with small contractors in the region, Edghill revealed that the proposed improvements will address growing traffic congestion and the deteriorating condition of the main access roads.

The comprehensive overhaul will focus on the entire Essequibo Coast road, with a plan to mill the existing asphalt, mix it with fresh material, and re-lay it almost immediately.

The minister emphasized that this approach would minimize traffic disruptions, with the goal of having sections of the road completed swiftly, allowing commuters to drive on newly paved roads the following day.

In addition to road upgrades, Minister Edghill confirmed that three bridges along the coast will also be reconstructed.

These projects are currently at the selective tendering stage, with evaluations expected to be completed before the end of the year.

Edghill noted that small contractors will be prioritized for the execution of these projects, ensuring that local businesses have the opportunity to contribute to the region’s infrastructure development.
