As economic activity continues to expand in Guyana’s hinterland regions, traffic law enforcement officials are ensuring that focus is placed on road safety among operators of heavy-duty vehicles. The Guyana Police Force is encouraging drivers to adopt measures that can help prevent accidents and improve safety along the country’s highways and interior roadways.

Drivers of logging and lumber trucks operating through Linden are being urged to comply with road safety measures to protect themselves and other road users.

Second-in-command of Traffic Region 10, Inspector Albert Anderson, said Linden’s position as the gateway to Guyana’s interior regions results in a high volume of logging-related traffic passing through the town daily.

“And we try to emphasize to them that they could carry reflecting cones and wads and even vests just in case they have a breakdown and these things along the highway or through the trailer, especially with those tyres that they’re carrying and the lugs how they’re placing them along the truck,” he said.

He noted that traffic ranks conduct routine enforcement exercises in and around Linden to ensure that operators of logging trucks and heavy-duty machinery comply with safety regulations, particularly those transporting large logs and heavy loads.

“A lot of logging and with the major infrastructure that’s going on, we find that a lot of heavy-duty machinery are mostly in the mining town itself. So, on a day-to-day basis, even myself and most traffic ranks, day-to-day enforcement on those same trucks to keep them in check,” he added.

Meanwhile, according to the Traffic Officer, regular awareness programs and face-to-face lecturers are being conducted to educate drivers on the importance of these safety measures.

The Guyana Police Force continues to encourage operators of logging trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles to adhere to safety requirements to reduce risks and enhance road safety for all users.
