The local poultry industry is experiencing a significant boost with the introduction of Black Giant Chickens, a development that is making waves across Guyana.

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha shared updates on the progress of this initiative, highlighting its positive impact on both the economy and vulnerable groups.

According to Minister Mustapha, over 100,000 Black Giant Chickens have been distributed across the coastland and hinterland regions.

The breed’s adaptability and low maintenance costs have led to increased revenue for beneficiaries, with market prices benefiting from the size of the birds.

“The program is progressing smoothly,” said Minister Mustapha. “The Black Giant breed, known for its substantial size, can yield up to 200 eggs and approximately 4.5 kilograms of meat annually. This makes it a valuable asset to the poultry industry.”

A key aspect of the program is its focus on supporting women, vulnerable groups, and youths. Minister Mustapha noted that housewives and other individuals from these groups are playing a crucial role in the initiative.

“Priority is given to these groups to ensure they benefit from the program, helping to enhance their livelihoods and contribute to the agricultural sector,” he added.

The Black Giant Chickens are not only boosting the local poultry industry but also aligning with Guyana’s commitment to strengthening its agricultural sector and ensuring a sustainable food supply.

This endeavor highlights the country’s efforts to enhance its agricultural practices and provide valuable opportunities for its citizens.
