On July 27, 2024, a significant training program for Overseers and Neighbourhood Democratic Councillors (NDCs) was introduced in Region Four, reflecting the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen local government bodies.
This initiative aims to bolster local governance and enhance community engagement.
The workshop attracted nearly 95 percent of the region’s councillors and overseers and covered essential topics such as legal affairs, financial management, community involvement, and record management.
The training is intended to provide local leaders with the skills needed to effectively manage and develop their communities.
Participants have recognized the importance of this training, highlighting its relevance at a crucial time for the country.
The Vice Chairman of the Industry/Plaisance NDC acknowledged the program’s importance in equipping them with necessary tools for better community service.
Similarly, a Councillor from the Diamond/Grove NDC noted the training’s benefits for improving service delivery across the community.
The Chairman of the Better Hope/La Bonne Intention NDC stressed the program’s significance for national development, emphasizing that the training will contribute to stronger governance throughout the country.
Local Government and Regional Development Minister Sonia Parag highlighted the crucial role of local leaders in national development and democratic strengthening.
She pointed out that the training is designed to ensure that local officials are well-prepared to fulfill their duties effectively.
Minister Parag also announced that the training program would be extended to all regions of Guyana, underscoring the government’s commitment to enhancing local governance and community development.
