LM&TC Proposes Plan to Ease Traffic Congestion at Wismar/McKenzie Bridge

In a bid to alleviate the persistent traffic congestion at the Wismar/McKenzie bridge, the Linden Mayor & Town Council (LM&TC) is exploring a new strategy.

Mayor Sharma Solomon revealed that the council is actively considering a plan to mobilize taxi operators at the Wismar shore.

Currently, the majority of taxis operate from McKenzie and travel to Wismar, contributing to congestion during peak hours.

By establishing a taxi park on the Wismar shore, the council aims to distribute taxi operations more evenly, thereby reducing wait times at the bridge for both commuters and taxi operators.

Solomon expressed optimism about the potential effectiveness of this initiative in alleviating traffic congestion. He emphasized that the plan could be particularly crucial during the upcoming Linden Town Week celebrations, as increased traffic is expected.

Additionally, Solomon highlighted the potential economic benefits of the proposed plan, as it could boost revenue for boat operators.

Despite ongoing frustrations among Lindeners regarding the traffic situation, there is hope that relief may be on the horizon with the construction of the new four-lane Wismar McKenzie bridge.

Last December, the Government of Guyana signed a contract with China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) Limited for the construction of the US$35 million bridge.

Currently, the contractor is in the mobilization phase and is slated to commence construction before the year’s end.

As Lindeners eagerly anticipate the completion of the new bridge, the LM&TC’s interim solution to ease traffic congestion underscores their commitment to addressing the challenges faced by residents and commuters in the region.
