Linden’s own Kaidon Persaud has secured a silver medal in the 800 meters event at the 51st CARIFTA Games held in Grenada.

The Guyana team returned home with an impressive tally of eight medals, including four gold, two silver, and two bronze.

Among these medals was Persaud’s silver in the under 17 boys 800 meters event, a testament to his skill and dedication on the track.

Reflecting on his performance, Persaud expressed satisfaction with his silver medal, although he had hoped for gold.

He credited his success to the unwavering support of his coach, Johnny Gravesande, and his family, emphasizing their crucial role in his journey as an athlete.

After taking a short break to recuperate, Persaud will resume training next week in preparation for the upcoming under-18 South American Championships qualifiers.

His determination to continue striving for excellence demonstrates his commitment to the sport and his aspirations for future success.

Meanwhile, Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr., announced plans to further support the development of athletes.

Through partnerships with the United States, athletes will receive training from Olympic coaches, and scholarships from overseas universities will be made available to both athletes and coaches.

Additionally, medalists will receive monthly stipends through the Government’s Stipend support program for athletes, further incentivizing their dedication and achievements.

The success of Persaud and his fellow athletes marks a significant milestone for Guyana, with this being the largest contingent the country has sent to the CARIFTA Games and the largest gold medal haul to date.

As Guyana continues to foster talent and invest in athletic development, the future looks promising for its athletes on the regional and international stage.
