Linden Teachers Return to Classrooms After Strike

Teachers in Linden, who had been on strike for over two months, resumed classes today following an agreement between the Guyana Teachers’ Union and the Ministry of Education last Friday.

NCN cameras visited several schools in Makenzie and Wismar, where a significant turnout of teachers was observed, although student attendance was reported to be low.

The strike initially began on February 5, lasting five weeks as teachers pressed for higher salary increases and duty-free concessions, among other demands.

Negotiations between the Teachers’ Union and the Education Ministry resumed in March under court mediation.

Talks were suspended after the Ministry cited budgetary constraints preventing salary increases from 2019 to 2023.

Proposals for salary adjustments from 2024 onwards were put forward for further discussion.
