A significant river defense project is underway at the Mackenzie Market Riverfront, valued at $95 million.
The initiative aims to address flooding and prevent erosion along the Demerara River, safeguarding the community’s well-being.
Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill recently visited the site to assess the progress.
He highlighted the importance of the river defense structure in protecting the lives and livelihoods of Linden residents.
The project, which spans 175 meters, is being executed by contractor C. Jory and Sons.
Minister Edghill emphasized that similar to previous projects in Speighland, this revetment project involves placing large boulders along the riverbank.
These boulders are designed to absorb wave energy and reduce environmental impact.
The Ministry of Public Works reported that $6.9 billion has been allocated in the 2024 budget for strengthening sea and river defense structures across Guyana.
This funding supports flood management planning to ensure effective design and maintenance of defense systems.
The river defense bill, passed by the National Assembly in May, focuses on enhancing flood management and maintaining robust defenses throughout the country.
