As bush, garbage, and grass fires continue to surge in Linden, the Linden Fire Service (LFS) is issuing a stern caution to residents, urging them to refrain from lighting fires.
Sub-Officer Fenton Drepaul Saul of the Guyana Fire Service in Region 10 revealed that in 2024 alone, the fire station has responded to 86 fire calls, marking a staggering 73 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
A significant portion of these calls, over 75, resulted from fires deliberately ignited by individuals, which quickly spiraled out of control, posing threats to both lives and property.
Saul emphasized the destructive impact of these fires on the ecosystem and highlighted the health risks associated with the toxic smoke they emit.
On Tuesday, the fire station responded to nine fire calls, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
Saul urged residents to exercise caution and implement preventive measures to curb the spread of fires.
He advised clearing dry vegetation from surroundings and implementing fire prevention measures to ensure safety.
Moreover, Saul reminded the public that lighting fires in open spaces is a criminal offense, and those found guilty will face punitive action.
He emphasized the importance of proper garbage disposal procedures to mitigate fire risks further.
With the Linden Fire Service on high alert and advocating for increased vigilance among residents, it is imperative for the community to collaborate in preventing the escalation of fires and safeguarding lives and property.
