Last-Minute Christmas Rush in Georgetown

December 24, 2024

As the countdown to Christmas draws to a close, shoppers in Georgetown are buzzing around the city, trying to check off their final holiday lists.

With only hours left before Christmas Day, the streets are filled with eager last-minute shoppers in preparation for the celebrations.

NCN News took to the streets to hear what Guyanese, both locals and visitors, have planned for the festive season.

Tatyana Ali, visiting from Canada, shared, “Family is very important to me, and I think it should be important to everyone. I’m excited to surprise my parents and my entire family; that’s my Christmas present to them,” as she recalled the loneliness she feels in the cold of Canada and how special it is to be with family during the holidays.

Shontelle Halley expressed her excitement, saying, “I’m spending time with the love of my life, our kids, and my other family members. Cake has already been baked, and pepper pot is on the stove! To the love of my life, baby, I love you with all my heart. I’m thinking of you always, and to our kids, I love you guys.”

Ronnella Greene and Venissa Powday shared their festive plans: “We’re cooking pepperpot, ginger beer, black cake, sponge cake, and everything Guyanese love on Christmas Day. I’ll be spending Christmas with my mom, my kids, and loved ones.”

For Taleana, Christmas is about giving back: “I am very big on charity, and one day I hope to open my own charity. Giving back is always nice.”

Visitors like Whitney Trasemita are excited to experience their first Christmas in Guyana. “I’ve been here for a couple of years but never experienced Christmas here. I’m looking forward to trying the pepper pot you guys have,” she shared.

Juliette Morales, visiting from Cuba, expressed her awe at the local Christmas spirit: “The fairy lights, decorations, and everyone buying gifts for their families are amazing. It’s very different from how we celebrate in Cuba, but I hope to have that spirit there one day.”

Whether spending time at home or visiting Guyana, this Christmas is about love, family, and creating unforgettable memories.

Merry Christmas from the NCN News team!
