The Chairman of the National Road Safety Council (NRSC), Earl Lambert, has proposed the implementation of a “three-strike system” to address repeat traffic offenders.

This proposal follows recent amendments to the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act, which now permits the use of photos and videos to prosecute errant motorists.

Strategically placed cameras at intersections and along major thoroughfares will capture images used to enforce traffic laws.

During the “Road Safety & You” program on Wednesday, Lambert emphasized the importance of a three-strike system, suggesting that repeat offenders should face license suspension.

Additionally, he proposed that drivers who have their licenses suspended should be required to retake their driving course to regain their license.

Under the new system, photos and tickets for road infractions will be sent directly to the vehicle owner’s phone and home address.

Meanwhile, Sergeant Harold Noble of the Sage Pond Police Station expressed concerns over the rising number of road accidents and incidents.

He stressed the need for increased public education on the proper use of roundabouts, noting that many drivers do not know how to navigate them correctly, leading to numerous accidents.

He highlighted that drivers often fail to wait or take appropriate caution at roundabouts, resulting in significant damage and loss of life.

In 2023, 175 people lost their lives in road accidents, underscoring the critical need for enhanced road safety measures.
