In an effort to address the housing needs of residents in Laing Avenue, Georgetown, the Ministry of Housing and Water has initiated the ‘Laing Avenue Housing Grant’ program.

The first phase of the program saw 60 families receiving $250,000 vouchers each, totaling $15 million, to facilitate home repairs.

The voucher distribution ceremony took place at the Ministry’s Camp Street annex, where beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the support.

One beneficiary, Norma Lashley, shared her appreciation for the government’s assistance, emphasizing the positive impact on her living conditions.

Another beneficiary, Judith Stephens, highlighted the urgency of repairs, particularly after her house suffered fire damage years ago.

The grant provides her with the opportunity to create a safer environment for her grandchildren.

Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, explained that the Laing Avenue Housing Grant Project is part of the government’s commitment to ensuring the comfort and well-being of citizens.

The initiative was born out of discussions between Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo and Laing Avenue residents in November of the previous year.

Responding to residents’ desires for assistance in upgrading their homes, Vice President Jagdeo pledged a project valued at $50 million.

The first phase involves 60 families, and each unit owner or occupier is set to receive an additional $100,000 to support labor costs for rehabilitation.

The overall goal is to benefit around 200 families through the Laing Avenue Housing Grant initiative.

The program aligns with the government’s broader housing initiatives, aiming to enhance living conditions and provide support for citizens in need of housing improvements.
