Labour market observatory to strengthen workforce planning – Min. Griffith

-by David Clarke

Guyana is moving to modernise its labor sector through digital transformation and smarter workforce planning. Labour Minister Keoma Griffith says a new labor market observatory will help government better match skills training with the country’s growing economic needs.

Addressing the plenary session of the 114th International Labor Conference, the minister highlighted the government’s national digitisation program, which will see most government services, including labour administration, fully digitised by the end of 2026.

“To this end, our government has strategically crafted a national digitisation program driven by investments in digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence, cross-agency collaboration and integration of ICT systems,” he said.

Minister Griffith said Guyana’s rapid economic transformation is creating new opportunities across multiple sectors, reshaping the labor market.

To keep pace with these changes, he noted that the government is modernising its systems and strengthening evidence-based data-driven manpower planning.

“Accordingly, the Ministry of Labor and Manpower Planning is presently advancing the development of a manpower strategic planning framework inclusive of a labor market observatory,” he added.

He explained that the observatory will generate critical data on skills gaps, labor demands, wage trends and migration patterns.Supported by artificial intelligence, it will provide real-time analysis and forecasting, enabling the government to better align training programs with national development priorities.
