Kwakwani Sec Takes Lion’s Share at YBG Challenge Series and Skills Competition

Over the weekend, Youth Basketball Guyana hosted a challenge series and skills competition at the National Gymnasium, where Kwakwani Secondary emerged as the dominant force, claiming the lion’s share of victories.

In the under 18 category, Kwakwani Secondary showcased their prowess by securing a hard-fought 22-14 victory over Bishop’s High School.

Despite a stellar performance from Bishop’s captain Carmelo Man-Son-Hing, who scored 10 points, Kwakwani emerged victorious.

The under 14 final witnessed Kwakwani’s youth team outclassing Bishop’s High School with a convincing 22-13 win.

Kwakwani’s Travon Hopkinson led the charge with an impressive 9-bucket performance.

However, Kwakwani faced defeat in the under 16 category, falling to Mackenzie High School with a score of 18-12, despite a strong start.

In the girls’ under 18 final, Kwakwani demonstrated dominance, defeating President College with a resounding 17-4 victory, led by Lanisha Mohammed’s impressive 10-point contribution.

The senior U21 category provided a tough challenge for Kwakwani against University of Guyana Trojan, but MVP Damarcus Adams led the team to a narrow 12-11 victory after trailing at halftime.

The competition format included 10-minute games divided into two halves, with no substitutions allowed.

This year’s event featured 50 teams from 22 schools across regions 3, 4, 6, 7, and 10.

Additionally, the skills challenge saw Stephon George emerge as the top 3-points shooter, Tavishti Persaud claimed the title of best free-throw shooter, and Simeon Sinclair won the combined skills contest.
