Former national player turned coach, Vurlon Mills, launched the August camp of his Vurlon Mills Football Academy on Saturday, with support from fast food giant KFC.
The camp, which will benefit children from the communities of Sophia and Buxton, will be held at the KFC Vlissengen Road location and it is scheduled to begin on Monday, July 3.
The two-week camp will run until Saturday, July 8 and participants will have the opportunity to learn technical skills, engage in social lessons, and receive hands-on football training during the first week. The second week will feature a mini tournament for players in four different age groups, aiming to foster the growth of new and aspiring talents in the game.
Pamella Manasseh, the marketing manager of KFC Guyana, expressed the company’s commitment to supporting youth and their sporting pursuits. Assistant Director of Sport, Franklin Wilson, affirmed the Ministry’s wholehearted support for any venture that contributes to the development of sports.
Vurlon Mills, the founder of the football academy, highlighted the camp as a significant part of their program and emphasized its alignment with his vision for youth football nationwide. He expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received from Beharry Restaurant Holding franchise, the parent company of KFC in Guyana. Mills mentioned that the invited teams would primarily consist of new players who have not yet competed competitively.
The camp, with a theme of teamwork, leadership, and confidence, targets boys under 9, 11, 13, and under 16 girls. It will cater to 100 youngsters from Sophia and Buxton, with sponsorship from KFC.
