Karate Introduced in Guyana’s Schools through IKO Guyana Academy and Ministry of Education Partnership

The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the International Karate Organization (IKO) Academy, is set to introduce karate as a subject in schools across Region 4, 5, and Georgetown. Teachers will undergo training to instruct students, and karate will become a subject for the Caribbean Examination Council.

Head of the Unit of Allied Arts, Nicholas Fraser, highlighted that this initiative aligns with the Ministry’s broader goal of nurturing well-rounded individuals among the student population. He expressed optimism about the program’s potential expansion to cover schools in all regions.

Education officer responsible for karate, Kevin Singh, emphasized that this program demands only the expertise of a skilled teacher and adequate space for training.

The initial phase of the program will span three months, during which the first cohort of teachers will receive certification from IKO Guyana. Senior instructor at IKO Guyana, Aliya Wong, encouraged all participants to wholeheartedly engage with the program and find enjoyment in the process.
