Justice Persaud, who dedicated over 70 years to the judicial system in both British Guiana and present-day Guyana, held titles such as the longest-serving magistrate in the British Commonwealth and the longest-serving Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission.
His legal career began as a British-trained lawyer, progressing from a Magistrate in British Guiana to a Puisne Judge in the High Court.
In paying tribute, President Irfaan Ali described Justice Persaud’s service as selfless, emphasizing his role as a strong and steadfast pillar in the judicial system.
Director of Public Prosecution, Shalima Ali-Hack, expressed that Justice Persaud’s contribution was sewn into the fabric of the judiciary, enhancing public trust and confidence in the legal system.
Attorney at Law Nigel Hughes highlighted Justice Persaud’s leadership in mediation, noting his unique ability to bring even the most hostile adversaries together for amicable settlements.
Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Hon. Anil Nandlall, praised Justice Persaud’s dedication to ordinary people in the various offices he held.
The funeral service drew attendance from prominent legal figures, including acting Chancellor of the Judiciary Justice Yonette Cummings-Edwards, acting Chief Justice Roxanne George, government ministers, retired legal personalities, and members of parliament.
Justice Prem Persaud’s legacy remains woven into the tapestry of Guyana’s legal system, leaving an indelible mark on the nation he served with distinction.
