The 2020 election fraud trial has officially resumed at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, with General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo urging citizens to follow the proceedings closely.
During a press conference on Thursday, Jagdeo emphasized the significance of the trial, stating that it would highlight alleged attempts by the opposition to manipulate the election results.
He also criticized opposition leader Aubrey Norton and Alliance For Change (AFC) leader Nigel Hughes for their continued denial of the events surrounding the 2020 elections.
The trial, which began on Monday, has been adjourned to March 17, when Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Sonia Parag is expected to testify.
The case is being presided over by acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty and involves nine defendants, including former APNU+AFC government officials and election officials.
Among those charged are PNC/R scrutineer Carol Smith-Joseph, former APNU+AFC Minister Volda Lawrence, former Chief Elections Officer Keith Lowenfield, and former Deputy Chief Elections Officer Roxanne Myers.
They face 19 conspiracy charges related to the declaration of fraudulent election results.
The case continues to draw significant national attention as the country approaches its next general elections.
