Jagdeo Stresses PPP’s Role in Upholding Democracy in Guyana

Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo advocates for a rejection of false narratives (CNW Network).

General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, firmly asserts that without the PPP, Guyana would not have experienced the democratic state it enjoys today. He made this statement in response to an editorial accusing the party of undemocratic behavior.

The editorial cited former President Donald Ramotar’s decision to prorogue the Guyana Parliament and an allegation that the PPP retained an AFC seat in the National Assembly. Dr. Jagdeo addressed both points, emphasizing that while the proroguing was a strategic political move, it was not unconstitutional.

He also underscored the historical context, stating that for meaningful dialogue between the parties, acknowledgment of the past by APNU and its PNCR faction is essential.

Dr. Jagdeo insisted that the PPP will continue to uphold democracy and will base its approach on this commitment.

During the March 2020 General and regional elections, Guyana experienced a prolonged wait for election results, as the APNU/AFC sought to retain power.
