General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and Vice President, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, has vowed to defend his government against any allegations that may arise in the ongoing legal case involving Assistant Commissioner Calvin Brutus.
Brutus appeared in court on Thursday to face 30 charges, including misconduct in public office, larceny by a public official, and money laundering, among others.
The charges stem from a three-month investigation by the Special Organized Crime Unit (SOCU), which uncovered large sums of money and properties allegedly linked to Brutus, his wife, and others.
Brutus, who has been granted bail, denies the charges and stated he would reveal more information in the coming weeks as part of his defense.
Dr. Jagdeo responded to Brutus’s statement, emphasizing that the government had no fear of what Brutus might reveal.
He expressed confidence in the justice system, labeling Brutus’s comments as a form of blackmail intended to intimidate the government.
Jagdeo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that justice is served.
Brutus, his wife Adonica Aulder, and others involved in the case, including Sergeant Kevin George and businessman Asif Zafarally, all face multiple charges.
Brutus’s wife is also facing money laundering charges linked to significant sums of money in Republic Bank accounts.
The four accused will return to court on November 18 for further proceedings, and are required to report to the Serious Organized Crime Unit (SOCU) monthly during the trial.
