Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo remains concerned over the 2020 election fraud case

Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), has denied allegations of attacking the judiciary.

He asserts that his comments are focused on concerns regarding the handling of the election fraud case and not on undermining judicial integrity.

Following Dr. Jagdeo’s remarks about potential delays in the election fraud case and the possibility of the matter being referred to the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton accused Jagdeo of making “vicious unjustifiable attacks” on the judiciary.

In response, Jagdeo highlighted that expressing concerns about judicial decisions is not equivalent to attacking the judiciary.

He drew a parallel with criticisms of the US Supreme Court, suggesting that such criticisms are accepted as part of democratic discourse.

Jagdeo also addressed the delays in the election fraud case, noting that it has been ongoing for several years with frequent postponements.

He expressed frustration over the slow pace compared to other criminal matters, particularly in light of a recent 30-day sick leave submitted by presiding Magistrate Leron Daly.

The PPP General Secretary contrasted his party’s stance with that of the previous APNU/AFC administration, asserting that the PPP respects the judiciary, unlike the former administration, which he claims exerted undue influence over judicial matters.
