Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, the re-elected General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), has outlined growing the party with a focus on reflecting Guyana’s diversity as a top priority.
Jagdeo secured his re-election during the first meeting of the new Central Committee convened on Tuesday.
Addressing the Congress’s conclusion, Jagdeo expressed confidence in the momentum of expansion the party is currently experiencing.
He emphasized the need to reshape the PPP’s image to better represent the diverse population of Guyana.
Jagdeo acknowledged past hesitations among some older party members but affirmed that the party’s leadership has successfully navigated these challenges.
He clarified that any uncertainty was not based on ethnicity but rather on generational differences.
The General Secretary emphasized the importance of diversity in building the party and highlighted delegates’ determination to engage at the grassroots level following the Congress.
He underscored the party’s commitment to maintaining trust and delivering on its promises.
Furthermore, Jagdeo emphasized his role in grooming young leaders within the party and government.
He expressed satisfaction with the increasing number of young members joining the PPP and being elected to the Central Committee.
Additionally, Jagdeo noted discussions during the Congress regarding the party’s focus on education and training for the next generation of leaders.
The PPP’s Congress took place from May 3 to May 5 at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC).
