PPP General Secretary Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has brushed aside the ongoing complaints from the opposition regarding the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), labeling them as the “usual” election tactics.

In a press conference at Freedom House, he emphasized that GECOM today, just as in 2015 when the opposition won the elections, continues to operate within the framework of the Constitution of Guyana.

Jagdeo expressed that the opposition’s constant barrage of falsehoods and accusations against GECOM will not help their electoral chances.

He noted that this has been a typical strategy employed by the opposition when they sense an impending loss in the polls.

He pointed out that despite numerous claims of election fraud in the most recent elections, the APNU/AFC coalition failed to provide any substantial evidence.

Instead, they filed what Jagdeo referred to as a “bare-boned and frivolous election petition.”

He reminded the press that the same voters’ list and electoral procedures used by GECOM in 2015, when the opposition won, are still in place today, with no complaints at that time.

However, as GECOM prepares for the 2025 elections, the opposition’s complaints have resurfaced, which Jagdeo believes is part of a “sinister motive.”

Dr. Jagdeo commended GECOM for its unwavering commitment to the laws of the country and for not bowing to political pressure from any party.
