General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, has reaffirmed the government’s dedication to alleviating the financial burdens faced by Guyanese citizens amid rising living costs.
Speaking at a recent party press conference, Dr. Jagdeo dismissed claims from the opposition that the government is neglecting the impact of the cost of living on the public.
Dr. Jagdeo emphasized that the current government has been addressing key cost-of-living issues in a more proactive manner compared to the previous administration.
He explained that five of the six major factors contributing to the cost of living – including transport, electricity, water, internet, and mortgages – have either remained stable or decreased since 2020.
However, he acknowledged that food prices continue to fluctuate due to global market conditions.
To mitigate this, the government has implemented measures such as removing taxes on various food products and introducing other supply-side interventions to help stabilize prices.
Since assuming office, the PPP-led administration, under President Irfaan Ali, has introduced a range of policies aimed at reducing the financial strain on citizens.
These initiatives include cash grants, tax cuts, wage increases, and increased support for key sectors such as farming and fishing, among others.
The government’s efforts have been geared towards not only addressing rising costs but also increasing disposable income for Guyanese families.
