Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, General Secretary of the ruling PPP/C, has accused opposition political parties of orchestrating a campaign to undermine the credibility of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).
The allegations have been voiced by several opposition groups, including the APNU, AFC, and ANUG, who have criticized the commission and its leadership, particularly GECOM Chair Retired Justice Claudette Singh.
Jagdeo described the opposition’s attacks as part of a broader effort to discredit GECOM, suggesting that these actions are meant to erode public trust in the commission’s ability to manage future elections.
He pointed out that, despite these criticisms, Singh played a key role in ensuring that the 2020 elections were conducted fairly and not manipulated.
The opposition parties, particularly the APNU, have been calling for Singh’s resignation, accusing her of incompetence and a lack of public trust in her leadership.
However, Jagdeo countered these claims, asserting that the opposition’s attacks on Singh were aimed at destroying her credibility due to her critical role in safeguarding the integrity of the 2020 election process.
He also emphasized that GECOM had resisted opposition calls for unconstitutional actions, continuing to follow the law in its operations.
Jagdeo praised the commission’s adherence to legal and constitutional principles, despite the pressure from opposition parties to deviate from them.
