The investigation into the tragic Guyana Defence Force (GDF) helicopter crash that occurred on December 6, 2023, is approaching its final stages.

Minister of Public Works, Hon. Juan Edghill, announced that a final engagement with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is set to take place soon, following which the final report will be circulated to stakeholders for feedback before being made public.

In an exclusive interview with Demerara Waves, Minister Edghill explained that while the completion of the investigation has taken longer than anticipated, it is crucial that the proper procedures be followed.

He emphasized that all relevant stakeholders must be consulted before the report can be finalized.

The investigation process has involved gathering statements and analyzing recordings, with the NTSB playing a key role in assisting with these technical aspects.

However, the black box from the helicopter was damaged, which has presented additional challenges for investigators.

The crash, which occurred on December 6, 2023, involved the GDF’s Belle 412 helicopter and tragically claimed the lives of five servicemen.

The deceased were Lt Col. Michael Charles, Retired Brigadier Gary Beaton, Colonel Michael Shahoud, Lieutenant Colonel Sean Welcome, and Staff Sergeant Jason Khan.

Two survivors were rescued from the wreckage: Lieutenant Andio Crawford and Corporal Wayne Jackson.

Minister Edghill reassured the public that efforts to complete the investigation are progressing, and once the final draft of the report is prepared, it will be shared with stakeholders for review.

After incorporating their comments, the report will be made available to the public in accordance with Article 13 of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.

The final report is expected to provide a clearer understanding of the circumstances surrounding the crash and the factors that contributed to the tragic incident.
