Fatal incident investigation at Aurora Gold Mine

The investigation into the fatal accident at the Aurora Gold Mine on Saturday, November 18, has been concluded.

The Occupational Safety and Health Department of the Ministry of Labour, in collaboration with the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC), conducted the probe.

The incident resulted in the tragic death of 47-year-old Joseph Licorish, a driver from West Watooka, Wismar, Linden, who was associated with the Aurora Gold Mines.

Over the past several weeks, the Ministry of Labour and GGMC, in partnership with the Guyana Police Force, worked to determine the true cause of the accident.

The Ministry of Labour has announced that it has identified the cause(s) of the accident and will provide the company with recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The investigative team assessed the accident scene, examined the trucks, reviewed maintenance records, gathered statements from eyewitnesses, and verified standard operational procedures with the maintenance department.

As part of the investigative process, maintenance workers, truck drivers, and operators received training on accident prevention and were sensitized to the importance of safe work practices.

The Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) department is currently analyzing the information obtained to determine the findings and make recommendations aimed at preventing similar incidents.

Joseph Licorish lost his life in a collision involving the truck he was driving and another truck driven by 41-year-old Nigel Denny.

Licorish was initially taken to the health center and later airlifted to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Minister of Labour Joseph Hamilton expressed concern about workplace fatalities, emphasizing the importance of promoting and maintaining a safe and healthy working environment for both workers and employers.
