Eagles Volleyball Club, in collaboration with the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF), is set to host the international edition of the ‘Road to Recovery’ tournament, signaling the return of international volleyball to Guyana.
The tournament, now in its second edition, is scheduled to kick off on November 24th and will run until the 26th, featuring teams from Brazil, Guyana, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and French Guiana.
John Flores, Vice President of the Guyana Volleyball Federation, expressed the challenges faced by the federation in organizing international tournaments due to factors such as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
However, the collaboration with Eagles Volleyball Club for the ‘Road to Recovery’ tournament aims to reignite international competition in the region.
The tournament, born out of an initiative by organizer Kristoff Shepherd and his club to host an event in his honor after a car accident, seeks to enhance and build upon the success of the previous edition.
Shepherd emphasized the improvements made for this year’s tournament, highlighting the inclusion of female teams in the competition.
The male teams will be divided into two groups, engaging in a round-robin format.
The participating male teams include Demerara and Berbice from Guyana, Suriname’s Yelico and Yellow Birds, Trinidad and Tobago’s Big Sepos, and Brazil’s Amazonia.
The female teams, organized into two groups, comprise a combined team from Guyana, Amazonia from Brazil, a team from Cayenne, Suriname’s Yelico, and Trinidad’s Big Sepos.
Admission to the tournament is free of charge on each day, with the finals set to take place on Sunday, November 26th.
The event is sponsored by Digicel, Silvie’s Industrial, Guyoil, Umami, and Stem Procurement Agency.
As the ‘Road to Recovery’ tournament unfolds, the volleyball community eagerly anticipates the return of spirited international competition and the positive impact it will have on the sport’s development in Guyana.
