The High Commission of India and the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre have commemorated India’s 80th Independence Day with a flag-raising ceremony in Georgetown.
Members of the Indian community, students, officials and friends of India attended the event.
Acting High Commissioner Manoj Kumar read excerpts from the address to the nation by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, highlighting the country’s goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
Tribute was also paid to India’s Armed Forces and Police as well as members of the Diaspora and diplomatic community. The address also remembered those who lost their lives or were displaced during the partition of India.
“We solemnly remember the…Indians who lost their lives in the violence resulting from partition or were forced to endure the tragedy of displacement,” he said.
The ceremony formed part of the global initiative and also celebrated the long-standing friendship of cultural ties between Guyana and India.
