Increasing Democracy Awareness for Empowered Citizens

President Dr. Irfaan Ali

On the occasion of the International Day of Democracy, it is underscored that heightened awareness and education on democracy are crucial to empower citizens. Guyana, like the rest of the world, observes this significant day.

As the government continues to safeguard the fundamental tenets of democracy, Guyanese citizens are granted rights such as equality, inclusivity, freedom of religion and belief, adherence to the rule of law, and the pivotal right to vote, among others.

During a recent panel discussion, it was emphasized that democratic education should be integrated into the school curriculum to safeguard the future of the nation and the upcoming generation. Tracy Shamsudeen, Co-chair of the Presidential Youth Council, articulated that democracy directly impacts daily lives, and education plays a pivotal role in the selection of a government.

Thandi McAllister, Marad’s Legal Services Director, further emphasized that young individuals can wield significant influence in democratic policy-making through the effective use of social media platforms to disseminate positive awareness.

President Irfaan Ali, in his message, reminded us of the fragility of democracy and the ease with which it can be undermined. He urged collective responsibility in safeguarding and nurturing democracy for the present and future generations.
