Inaugural One Guyana Squash President’s Cup a Success

By Tyriq Walters – December 27, 2024

The inaugural One Guyana Squash President’s Cup has been hailed as a resounding success by Guyana Squash Association (GSA) President, David Fernandes.

Speaking to NCN Sport, Fernandes expressed gratitude for the support from the Government of Guyana, particularly the Ministry of Sport and the National Sports Commission.

“This was a fantastic tournament, and it’s the first time we’ve had a One Guyana tournament sponsored by the Government. Over 50 athletes participated, both in doubles and singles. Normally, younger players don’t get to see the senior players compete because of school and homework, so this was a great opportunity for them,” Fernandes explained.

The tournament allowed juniors to engage with seniors, which was a highlight for many of the participants.

Looking ahead, Fernandes shared plans to further develop squash in the country, mentioning seven local tournaments scheduled for the upcoming year.

He also discussed efforts to grow the sport, with a focus on schools.

“With this facility, it is quite possible to engage schools in the area. We are looking at possibly introducing mobile units to bring squash to different schools, giving kids the opportunity to develop hand-eye coordination and discover if they are capable of playing the game,” Fernandes said.

The One Guyana Squash President’s Cup lasted 10 days and saw Jason Ray Khalil claim the Men’s Open title, while Nicolette Fernandes won the Female Open.
