IKO Academy Guyana Hosts Successful Grading Ceremony for Karate Students

By Eric Collymore

The International Karate Organization (IKO) Academy of Guyana has successfully conducted its annual grading examinations, marking a significant milestone for its students.

This year’s event saw a number of participants advancing to higher belt ranks, reflecting their progress and dedication to the sport.

The grading session, held at the Muslim Youth Organization facility on Woolford Avenue, included students from various regions, including Linden, Hope Secondary, and Georgetown.

Sensei Jeffrey Wong expressed satisfaction with the remarkable growth demonstrated by the students.

He also acknowledged the crucial support of parents, who play a vital role in the development of their children both inside and outside the dojo.

A total of 65 students participated in the examinations, with several achieving promotions from 7th kyu to 5th kyu, as well as advances from 4th kyu to 2nd kyu, and from 10th kyu to 7th kyu.

Last year, the IKO Academy expanded its reach through a partnership with the Ministry of Education’s Unit of Allied Arts, incorporating Hope Secondary School into its program.

This initiative has contributed to the academy’s mission of positively shaping young minds.

The academy’s karate in schools program is focused on training teachers to become instructors, with the goal of including karate as a subject in the Caribbean Examination Council’s curriculum.
