Uncertainty looms over the hosting of this year’s Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) in Suriname.
Originally scheduled for October 26-31 in the Dutch-speaking nation, the event has been deferred for several weeks due to financial constraints.
Minister of Sport, Charles Ramson Jr, addressed the issue on Wednesday, affirming his ministry’s unwavering commitment to providing every opportunity for Guyanese athletes to compete.
Ramson acknowledged that ongoing discussions between the National Sport Commissions of both countries are underway.
He emphasized that once a new date is confirmed, the Ministry will take swift action to facilitate Guyana’s active participation.
The Inter-Guiana Games, established in 1967, traditionally occur on an annual basis.
After a hiatus of five years, the games made a triumphant return in 2022, with Guyana hosting the event, welcoming over 400 athletes and coaches.
Competing nations in the IGG include Guyana, Suriname, and French Guyana.
As the uncertainty surrounding the event persists, the Ministry of Sport remains resolute in its dedication to ensuring that Guyana’s athletes have the opportunity to showcase their talents on the international stage.
