The International Development & Relief Foundation (IDRF), a Canadian non-profit organization, has successfully concluded its Suicide Prevention Training for Gatekeepers Programme in Guyana.
This initiative, aimed at safeguarding the mental well-being of vulnerable communities, trained 750 individuals across the country.
The training focused on equipping participants with skills in individual crisis intervention techniques and community strategies tailored to address the underlying causes of suicide within Guyana’s diverse cultural landscape.
According to Shameena Haniff, Country Manager of IDRF, this effort ensures that gatekeepers are well-prepared to offer crucial assistance to those experiencing suicidal thoughts.
Haniff emphasized the collaborative nature of combating Guyana’s high suicide rates, noting that the country consistently ranks among the top five globally in terms of suicide percentages.
She underscored the importance of teamwork in identifying and supporting individuals with mental health challenges, urging communities to proactively reach out and connect those in need with the appropriate resources.
The initiative drew participants from various sectors including health, education, public and private sectors, and NGOs, reflecting a unified approach to addressing mental health issues in Guyana.
Looking ahead, IDRF plans to expand its efforts with a comprehensive training program focused on mental health education for educators in the country.
This initiative marks a significant step forward in Guyana’s efforts to promote awareness and support for mental health issues, underscoring IDRF’s commitment to improving the well-being of communities.
