The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security has initiated a series of nationwide consultations on the draft Protection from Harassment Bill.
The legislation aims to address various forms of harassment, including sexual harassment in private and public settings, workplace harassment, stalking, and related behaviors.
This week, the Ministry launched its outreach efforts, starting with a consultation at the New Amsterdam Regional Democratic Council (RDC).
Legal Officer Allizen Welch-Critchlow explained that these consultations are designed to gather public feedback, address concerns, and identify any gaps in the draft legislation.
The collected input will guide the drafting process to ensure a comprehensive and effective law.
The consultations will continue across all ten administrative regions, providing opportunities for citizens to learn about the proposed legislation, voice their opinions, and ask questions.
Sessions are set to run until December 5, with dates and venues posted on the Ministry’s Facebook page.
The draft bill defines harassment as directly or indirectly engaging in conduct that causes harm or inspires a reasonable belief that harm may occur.
This includes behaviors such as unreasonably following, watching, pursuing, or accosting an individual.
The Ministry encourages public participation in these sessions to ensure the new legislation reflects the needs and concerns of all citizens.
