on Friday, the Hope and Justice Center in Lusignan, East Coast Demerara, hosted an open day to increase awareness about its services and to remind the public of its availability.
The center, which serves approximately 30 individuals daily, focuses significantly on cases related to domestic violence.
Dr. Cona Husbands, Manager of the Sexual Offences Unit at the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, highlighted that over 50% of the cases handled by the center are related to domestic violence since its inception.
She emphasized that the center’s establishment stemmed from ongoing efforts by the ministry to combat intimate partner violence in Guyana.
The center aims to consolidate various services to support survivors of abuse, providing legal aid, counseling, and a safe space.
It operates Monday to Friday from 8 AM to 4 PM, catering to residents from Industry to Mahaica on the East Coast.
For those needing assistance or reporting abuse, the center encourages using the 912 Hotline.
